I thought my system was just corrupted but it turns out this is a "feature" of installing VMWare Server. It replaces the MS GINA (Graphical Identification and Authentication) DLL with its own so that it can stop/start VMWare machines on startup/shutdown. There's a MS KB article on this if you want to disable VMWare's GINA DLL, but you'll have to start/stop VMWare machines yourself if you do this.
