PermaLink Windows Update Russian Roulette04/16/2007 02:07 AM
I hate how MS keeps renumbering their windows updates.  They should at least reference their old ones.  For those of you afflicted by the "can't boot your system after a windows update" (in particular, the old KB920958 and KB90852 updates I blogged about already), the latest in this update from hell is KB931784.  No clue what it does from the details except it's some kernel change.

And if you get a cryptic error 0x643 while doing a VS.2005 SP1 update using Windows Update, it's probably because you ran out of space on your Windows drive. Even though the update says it needs 6GB on your install drive and I installed it to a different drive/partition than what Windows was installed on, it installed most of the update to the Windows drive which had 2GB of space on it (the drive VS.2005 is installed on has 18GB). The workaround is to download the VS.2005 SP1 update directly instead using Windows Update. I'd suggest you do the same w/ the MSSQL2005 SP2 update. It's better than wasting your time sucking down 300MB (MSSQL) and 400MB (VS.2005) updates via Windows Update and having the update croak an hour into it :-(
